Situated in southeastern Virginia, Virginia Beach is a vibrant coastal city with sandy beaches, a variety of attractions, and a lively atmosphere. The city, with its population of nearly 1.5 million, attracts millions of visitors each year, and is part of the larger Hampton Roads region. There are attractions for visitors and locals of all ages, including pristine beaches and the iconic Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

With its vibrant atmosphere and variety of activities, the Virginia Beach Boardwalk is a fantastic destination for families with kids. It stretches three miles along the Atlantic coastline, so even if you just want to walk along it, you’ll have a lovely time. You and your family can play on the beach, ride bikes, enjoy amusement park rides, and explore the many boardwalk attractions.

  • Beach Play

The first thing you may notice is that the boardwalk provides direct access to the beach. There, kids can build sandcastles, play beach volleyball, or simply splash in the waves or go boogie boarding. It's a great place for some fun under the sun. Remember to put on your sunscreen, and reapply it as needed.

  • Bike Rentals

We mentioned how nice it is to take a walk along the boardwalk, but the area isn't restricted to foot traffic. In fact, renting bicycles is a popular activity here, with numerous rental shops where you and your kids can find bikes, tandem bikes, or even surreys. People also jog and rollerblade along the boardwalk, which has paths to keep everyone in their own lane.

  • Rides and Amusements

Along the boardwalk, you'll find various amusement parks and arcades offering thrilling rides, bumper cars, go-karts, and other exciting attractions. These include Atlantic Fun Park, with roller coasters, bumper cars, and more; Jungle Golf, a tropical-themed mini-golf course; Rudee's on the Inlet, with a mix of amusement park rides and water-based activities; and Beach Arcade, which includes classic and modern arcade games.

  • Beachfront Playgrounds

There are several fantastic playgrounds scattered along the boardwalk, offering swings, slides, climbing structures, and other play equipment. They include Neptune's Park, a popular playground inspired by the city's iconic Neptune statue with a large wooden play structure resembling a ship; JT's Grommet Island Park, an inclusive playground with wheelchair-accessible ramps, adaptive swings, sensory play panels, and other inclusive features; 17th Street Park, which features play structures, slides, and swings; and 24th Street Park, with its colorful play structures, climbing walls, slides, and swings.

  • Live Entertainment

The concerts include local bands, tribute acts, and touring artists, from rock and pop to jazz and country. If you've been wanting to get your kids interested in live music, taking them to a boardwalk concert is a great step in that direction. You'll also find performances celebrating the cultural diversity of Virginia Beach, like traditional dances, music, and performances representing different cultures and ethnicities. Sometimes, the stages host theater productions and dance performances from local groups. And yes, there are concerts and shows geared toward children, including interactive shows with  puppetry, storytelling, and children's musicians.

  • Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum

Whether they like to admit it or not, kids love an engaging learning experience, and the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum in Virginia Beach can provide just that. The museum is not only about the birds of the region, it's also about decoy carving, waterfowl hunting, and more.

Many exhibits highlight the history and craftsmanship of wildfowl decoy carving, and you'll find displays of intricately carved and painted decoys. If you're interested in carving, you'll probably learn something new, as the exhibits provide insights into techniques, materials, and styles used. Other exhibits are dedicated to expert wildfowl-themed art, like paintings, sculptures, and so on, capturing the beauty of local wildfowl.

The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum even offers educational programs and workshops that promote wildfowl conservation, habitat preservation, and the importance of art featuring the natural world.

As you can see, The Virginia Beach Boardwalk offers a plethora of opportunities for family fun and entertainment.
